சொல்லின் பொருள் அதன் சூழ்நிலையைப் பொறுத்தது. A word is known by the company it keeps. Noscitur a sociis.

வசனம் என்பது வெறும் சொற்களின் கூட்டல்ல - வசனத்திலிருந்து அகற்றப்பட்டு, அகராதி கொண்டு அல்லது வழக்குத் தீர்ப்புகள் கொண்டு வரையறுக்கப்பட்டு, நீங்கள் தனித்தனியாக கொடுக்கும் கருத்துடன் மீள வசனத்துள் இடப்படும் சொற்களின் கூட்டல்ல… Sentences are not mere collections of words to be taken out of the sentence, defined separately by reference to the dictionary or decided cases, and then put back into the sentence with the meaning you have assigned to them as separate words (Judge J.
